music: khamosh shah lyrics: vijay maurya, swanand kirkire, azazul haque & khamosh shah music label: zee music expectations: there are none, really. music: there is a glut of so many new voices coming up of late that we wonder how to distinguish one from the other, as everyone's going the high-pitched ones and the ubiquitous vocal processing on machines does the rest - of the confusion, that is. khamosh shah, the composer of this album, who also writes some of the lyrics, sings the sober 'naina' (written by azazul haque), and this is a case in point. the fairly pleasant though complex composition with some melodiously arranged orchestration has the singer sounding like arijit singh, papon and others in different parts of the song. the lyrics (swanand kirkire) of 'bachpan' (amit trivedi) sound like the typical gulzar-ian brand of esoteric imagery. with an amit-like compositional structure and orchestral tenor, the song emerges as a hybrid number that makes too much of an (unsuccessful) effort to sound poignant. nakash 'saree ke fall sa' aziz treis his best in the fun track 'na heer na hoor' but the dull composition and trite words (azazul haque) allow nothing but a forgettable ditty. anand shinde and vaishali made sing the completely marathi 'ye na gade' (penned by vijay maurya). though we welcome another language as a change from the all-pervading and incomprehensible punjabi that we hear in every second film, we hope that the situation strongly justifies the use of a non-hindi song in a hindi movie. also, this is the only track in the film that is completely cacophonous, and khamosh must know the difference between a rousing song and a raucous one. khamosh, as a composer, also seems to be either strongly influenced by past successful names or has a way of paying tributes that goes more towards imitation. his 'dil lagaana' (for which he also pens lyrics) is exactly like the (inferior) songs altaf raja would sing and compose in the '90s after he became a rage - and altaf is singing here! similarly 'hunterr 303' is in the bappi lahiri canon, as bappi is singing it as well. the lyrics (vijay maurya) are trite and suggestive, and bappi is his usual self. that leaves us with the album's moderate saving grace. 'chori chori' (sung nicely by arijit singh with sona mohapatra), gentle and soothing, the song does not save the score, but becomes a passable oasis in this musical desert.

the movie opens with our male and female protagonists - titoo and gulshan (dahiya and jaiswal) - who are each sitting with their lawyer and discussing what we will find out, are their marital woes. their respective stories are played out in a series of lengthy flashbacks. titoo's mom urges him to get a career and get married while his dad is supportive of whatever he does, as long as it is honest. so titoo opens a liquor store, but the women of the mohalla complain about that. next, he tries working in a lingerie store, but is slapped and sacked when he accidentally tries to cop a feel with one of the ladies while measuring her bra size. similarly, other jobs come and go. meanwhile, our heroine gulshan is a hockey-loving tomboy who would rather display her skills with a hockey stick on the field rather than with a belan, rolling out warm rotis in a kitchen. but this tomboy is eventually tamed when she meets titoo, whom she completely falls for. but hang on, the mba in the movie stands for 'married but available' ratherthan the degree and unbeknownst to her.

n the process, they become known as the ungli gang. d’silva does try to inject a sense of thrill by introducing sanjay dutt as acp ashok kale (who his immediate superior calls ‘kali’; what an effort to convey that the superior doesn’t know the local dialect!), who in turn seeks help from nikhil abhyankar (emraan hashmi) to arrest the ungli gang because abhyankar is one of those cops who thinks like a criminal. but that’s about it. the plot turns flaccid, banal and as straight as your ungli once abhyankar infiltrates the gang. one expects a cat-and-mouse game to follow this development, some twists and turns to make you reach the edge of your seat, but you end up feeling disappointed. the gang sets about to clean the system and does it without any hiccups. one must make special mention of zaveri’s dialogues. nobody can beat this hilarious ‘aansoo-on se sirf whiskey dilute hoti hai’ as abhyankar sets about encouraging kale to take the fight against corruption to its logical end. of the cast, only randeep hooda shows some guts and style in essaying the role of a crime reporter-turned-system-cleaner but his ungli (i mean effort) falls flat as they go about exposing corrupt pension officials, traffic police and the wheeler-dealers who broker police transfers for a fee. there is not much to comment on neha dhupia’s role as a television anchor-cum reporter who first takes the initiative to scoop the details about the ungli gang and later whimpers that her boss yells at her because she has failed to make any inroads. so much for characterisation! the worst part of ungli is the way the climax unfolds. the vigilantes go about exposing the dayals -- mahesh manjrekar and his son rajat kaul -- without the latter doing any ungli to repulse the four friends. the scene just begins and ends in a blink-and-you-miss moment! ungli begins with a bang and that’s about
