Kapoor & Sons
(According to Abir Saha Kapoor & Sons is a 3 star movie)
‘kapoor & sons’ seems to have taken to heart that famous tolstoy line: “all happy families are alike, each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way”, in the way it chooses a specific kind of unhappiness for each member of the kapoor family. the fact that bollywood is now confident enough to give us a family which is not bursting with joy is a thing to be lauded. meet the kapoors : grandpa (rishi kapoor), middle-aged son (rajat kapoor) and his wife (ratna pathak shah), and two grandsons rahul (fawad khan) and arjun (sidharth malhotra), all gathered together after many years for a re\union at their coonoor homestead. also read: kapoor & sons box office collections: alia, sidharth, fawad starrer earns rs. 6.85 cr on day one at first it is a huge relief that the kapoors don’t go about slobbering over each other. they are not gratingly saccharine. they squabble, shout and yell. simmering resentments between the two young men, kept at bay all this time, come out. there’s tension between the older couple as well, which keeps spilling out all the time. you see these people stepping around each other, ducking and weaving, lying to each other, and you are thinking, hey now, great, here are finally, actually people you can recognize. and then you stop. because much too soon you recognize them too well. because they are all playing to a type, and we’ve seen so many of them so often in hollywood flicks. rishi kapoor, almost unrecognizable underneath all that make-up, is meant to be the jolly ol’ roguish gramps. fawad’s rahul is the london-based ‘perfect’ older son, so often called ‘hot’ by pretty women that you know exactly what that portends. sidharth’s arjun is the ‘loser’ who is constantly having to prove himself. and tia (alia bhatt) is yet another version of the manic pixie girl dealing with past tragedy. the result is a cook-out which pleases only in patches. this turns the characters into stock, and the film into a constructed thing, and you know what’s coming much before it actually does. which is a pity because a film like this one, with a nice sense of place (the house has a lived-in feel ; the hill town used as home, not a series of picturesque spots) and more-than-competent performers, could have been that rare bollywood thing : a grown-up drama featuring grown-ups.

Batman V Superman
(According to Abir Saha Batman V Superman is a 4 star movie)
fearing the actions of a god-like super hero left unchecked, gotham city’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. and with batman and superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before. Love Games
(According to Abir Saha Love Games is a 2 star movie)
bhatt’s story is designed to shock. it exploits ideas like the wife as a possession; rich, bored people with too much idle time on their hands; drug abuse, threesomes, etc. while the three principal actors – arora, patralekhaa and berry – dive into their shallow parts with gusto, they are encumbered by completely unbefitting costuming and hairstyling and clumsy dialogues.

Ki & Ka
(According to Abir Saha Ki & Ka is a 3 star movie)
in the hollywood comedy the intern, anne hathaway heads her own ecommerce fashion company, while her husband anders holm is content with being a stay-at-home father. similarly, in balki's ki and ka; the role of the woman and the man are refreshingly reversed. right at the start, you're told through a convoluted monologue that kia doesn't want to be a man's `support system.' so when she meets the sentimental kabir, who doesn't aspire to be like his billionaire-builder father, instead wants to be like his homemaker-mother, you're ready for the sparks. kia downs expensive scotch with kabir who is three years her junior. soon, he proposes marriage and even agrees to wear the mangalsutra!

The Jungle Book
(According to Abir Saha The Jungle Book is a 4 star movie)
'the jungle book' starts with majestic jungle landscapes, tons of wild species and a human child (mowgli), who is beating all the odds by surviving among the toughest creatures. the storyline is a bit predictable. but, hey, it only makes the flick interesting as now the characters get more space to open up because they need not define themselves unlike other movie franchises.
