etween choice and destiny, which would you pick? is it really a choice one makes if destined for something? and such is the subtext to this sappy, clichã©d love story of an army officer who believes he’s made a choice, falls in love but appears buffeted by destiny’s changing winds. captain jahan bakshi (pulkit samrat) finds suhaani (yami gautam) swimming in a restricted zone and brings her to his camp. friendly banters turn into passionate letters and the couple decides to marry after singing four songs in 40 minutes. but, they have to match up to bollywood standards, and thus arises a series of problems. can the two ultimately write a love story that’s not inspired by hindi cinema?

director anurag kashyap treads familiar ground with raman raghav 2.0. it is overwhelmingly dark with deep macabre undertones. kashyap gets the moral pendulum oscillating between his prime characters - one a cold-blooded murder and another who has all the makings of becoming one. he subtly draws parallels between the personalities of his men who stand on opposite sides of the spectrum. raman beautifully puts it in one of the film's early scenes that after all, he and raghav are the same people but the police uniform validates or criminalises their actions.

there’s a moment somewhere in the beginning of the film when salman khan’s character comes to a halt at a rail crossing, and waits, just like the rest of us do, for the train to pass. in that instant we know that sultan is about to push twin boundaries. of a star’s scope, and of mainstream bollywood. that this will not be the super-human, super-hero bhai who has been shown crossing the tracks just a whisker ahead of a rushing locomotive from one of his several forgettable flicks. that this will be a khan who has to, literally, do a lot of heavy-lifting to win the crown.

madaari begins with irrfan khan’s voiceover sonorously telling us a story about the struggle between a baaz (a hawk) and a chooza (chick). it sounds real, he says, but not as good — if in the end the hawk tramples over the chick. however, the same story would feel good but unreal with a different end, one in which the chick gets the better of the hawk. nishikant kamat’s madaari is a familiar tale of the chick aka common man’s fight against the hawk of a corrupt system — the politicians, bureaucrats, administration et al — that is seen as the cause for every problem facing the nation, be it inflation, unemployment or water crisis. it is, yet another one of the new age vigilante genre of films that articulates the frustration and cynicism deep-seated in the middle-class indian psyche. the resemblance to a wednesday, in so far as the larger arc is concerned, is uncanny and unmistakable. there the common man played by naseeruddin shah plants bombs to fight terrorists, here khan kidnaps the home minister’s son to take a unique revenge for his own son’s death and to get the better of politicians, and, as in both the films, the narrative is all about the cat and mouse game, about how the cops (anupam kher there, jimmy sheirgill here) eventually nab the man but not before he has addressed the nation, spoken his mind, all in an effort to try and wake up the sleeping citizens.
