Fitoor
(According to Mallikharjuna Rao Fitoor is a 4 star movie)
fitoor ticks the first two boxes emphatically. it is packaged brilliantly. it also has epic sweep. but in respect of context, it falls well shy of perfection. the screenplay sets classic dickensian tale in captivating kashmir but is unable to justify the choice of location projecting the hauntingly desirable heroine as a metaphor for a paradise torn between conflicting forces. despite failing, fitoor succeeds in turning a literary classic into a contemporary cinematic feast for the eyes and the senses.go for it because there might not be too many better films than fitoor this year.

Deadpool
(According to Mallikharjuna Rao Deadpool is a 3 star movie)
i have never been so happy to have a comic book literate buddy to watch a movie with as i was watching deadpool. i’m not familiar with deadpool the character (i know he’s connected to x-men and considered an anti-hero, but that is about it). so, he gave me a lot of knowledge about the character that most people will need going into deadpool. i got a nice primer on all the pop culture references, frat-boy humor, and lots of zak morris-style breaking of the fourth wall. however, he was also the source of some (a lot) of annoyance for me, because he was laughing a lot at stuff i didn’t find funny, and when you’re sitting in a movie, actively hating something you know other people really like (in my case, of my friend sitting right next to me), it can make the experience even worse—because i honestly hated this movie. it was literally a nightmare experience to sit through. however, despite my strong dislike of this movie, i know that alone doesn’t necessarily make it a terrible movie.

Mastizaade
(According to Mallikharjuna Rao Mastizaade is a 4 star movie)
sample some of the dialogue — a brother and sister are in love with the same man, so the brother says, “tu meri sister hai lekin sunny mera bistar hai.” in another scene, a character says: “iske pehle ki rab ne banadi jodi, chadh lo do ya teen aur ghodi.” a woman with massive breasts is called titli. at one point, tusshar and co-star vir das look like they are mating with a horse. and then, there is the lucky mascot of sex comedies, riteish deshmukh. once again, he’s doing a cameo. at the beginning, he’s running some sort of bar called one night stand. by the end, he’s a guru at the aurgasm ashram. milap and mushtaq are gleefully misogynistic, homophobic and even throw in a running gag about stammering. this is supposed to be funny. it’s brain dead and unrelenting.

The Revenant
(According to Mallikharjuna Rao The Revenant is a 3 star movie)
great film has the power to convey the unimaginable. we sit in the comfort of a darkened theater or our living room and watch protagonists suffer through physical and emotional pain that most of us can’t really comprehend. too often, these endurance tests feel manipulative or, even worse, false. we’re smart enough to “see the strings” being pulled, and the actor and set never fades away into the character and condition. what’s remarkable about alejandro gonzalez irritu’s “the revenant” is how effectively it transports us to another time and place, while always maintaining its worth as a piece of visual art. you don’t just watch “the revenant,” you experience it. you walk out of it exhausted, impressed with the overall quality of the filmmaking and a little more grateful for the creature comforts of your life.

Chalk N Duster
(According to Mallikharjuna Rao Chalk N Duster is a 5 star movie)
chalk n duster is mostly about the management of a popular public school kantaben high school where indu ji (zarina wahab) is the principal. kamini gupta (divya dutta), who can’t see education and business in seclusion, is her deputy. vidya sawant (shabana azmi) and jyoti thakur (juhi chawla) are senior and much-loved teachers who put their students above everything. has it started to remind you of shahid kapoor-starrer paathshaala? well, that film was also based on a similar theme. but this one dares to venture beyond the school’s room.

Chauranga
(According to Mallikharjuna Rao Chauranga is a 4 star movie)
life is cheap in these parts, and that point is illustrated effectively in a scene in which an outcaste boy falls into the temple well. the landlord, concerned only with purifying the water in the well, spares no thought for the fatally injured boy who may not make it.but is it merely enough to hold a mirror? i was hoping chauranga would express more outrage…that it might explore what happens when the oppressed challenge the status quo. that might be a film of our time. this, i’m afraid, we’ve seen .

Ghayal Once Again
(According to Mallikharjuna Rao Ghayal Once Again is a 2 star movie)
lapak jhapak' is the first song to arrive and it is a campus track with yashita sharma, siddharth mahadevan and armaan mallik singing for a bunch of a youngsters. this one is themed on youth taking over the world and while it has a consistent rhythm to it, overall the composition is just about ordinary. the same holds true for the lyrics too that just about pass muster. arijit singh is roped in for the second song, 'khuda hai tere andar'. this one has a slow beginning to it and is set as a soft-rock track. the mood stays on the same lines right through its duration and is about finding inner conscience and battling all the challenges that come one's way. again, though the tune is ordinary, one expects this one to make an impact in the film's narrative.

Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3
(According to Mallikharjuna Rao Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 is a 2 star movie)
the one in the ‘kya kool’ series faithfully follows the thrust-boob-butt template, as kanhaiya (tusshar kapoor), rocky (aftab shivdasani) and mickey (krushna abishek) make whoopee in thailand. oh wait. in keeping with the nature of this flick, i should say peepee. because that’s a word that raises laughs amongst the easy-to-please, as does the old ‘lena’, ‘dena’, ( a girl is called marilee, sigh), ‘uski’, ‘chuski’, and so on. and, oh, also, ‘popat’, which means a ‘parrot’, and ahem, another word for the male private part.

Airlift
(According to Mallikharjuna Rao Airlift is a 2 star movie)
airlift is argo with a split personality, songs and questionable fidelity to facts. raja krishna menon’s film is loosely based on the true story of how indians were evacuated from kuwait after the iraqi invasion in 1990. when the going is good, the film is very good, but it is intermittently confusing, as though two directors made it: the first one understood that this subject required realistic treatment slightly removed from the conventional bollywood film; the second entered the picture after it was completed and spoilt the tone in places by adding loud songs, needlessly heightened the pitch of the romance between the hero and his wife, and ended with a splash of stretched-out, flag-waving patriotism. these add-ons qualitatively diminish an otherwise well-handled film that is unusual on the bollywood firmament, the sort rarely headlined by a star of akshay kumar’s stature in this industry. our hypothetical director 2 should have respected the audience’s intellect a little more.
